Scraping the information from tripadvisor's NYC restaurant rankings allows us to uncover a few insights as well as confirm some prior suspicions.
First, not all cuisines are created equal. Even though some cuisine types are heavily represented in the total dataset, they're not very highly ranked. By browsing the very top 25 or so best restaurants on the list, one sees that "French" appears frequently, while some other cuisines, while popular overall, fail to make it to the top of the list. Doing comparison charts allows us to see that most cuisine types (there are 49 in total) don't make it to the top 1% rankings, and there are substantive differences between what's popular and what's truly high quality.
On the reviews front, there is a positive correlation between the number of reviews and a restaurant's ranking. The better ranked ones generally also receive more reviews, and -- unsurprisingly, -- they also tend to be more expensive. While most establishments receive fewer than 500 reviews, most of the ones that receive more tend to be better ranked (top 500 or so).
Finally, if you're an adventurous eater and like to explore offbeat cuisines, the 10 least represented are summarized in a table in the last tab. Maybe some Pakistani or Venezuelan delicacies will enlighten your palate. Meanwhile, the very best restaurant in each cuisine group is summarized in the final table.
