Speaker:

Andrew Nicklin, NYC DoITT’s Director of Research & Development, is focused on an agenda of technology innovation, open government, and civic engagement. He currently manages the NYC’s OpenData portal, at http://nyc.gov/data.

Kevin Wolkober, experienced web designer and developer, has successfully released his app "NYC wifi" to apple app store. His app is a Wi-Fi hotspot locater for NYC containing a Wi-Fi location dataset provided by NYC Open Data.

Outline:

Andrew introduced us to NYC OpenData (http://nyc.gov/data) and NYC Developer Portal (http://nyc.gov/developer). He also touched on NYC Open Data licensing problem.

Kevin shared his experience using NYC open data and developing mobile app. He addressed some technical challenges he faced when building the app, which were iPhone programming-specific.
