Over the course of the workshop we covered how we created the EnergyZip application. In a series of 5-10 min talks we'll cover each step in the map's creation. In between the short talks, we'll work directly with you to get a full dynamic map up and running.
Speakers:
Dr Jon Roberts and Dr Jeff Allen are cosmic ray astrophysicists who spend time visualizing the universe in their day job, and visualizing NYC on evenings and weekends. Their recent interactive map of New York electricity use - EnergyZip - was recently featured in The Atlantic.
Outline:
We covered the following steps in map creation:
- Basic map outlines
- D3 projection
- Scoupling data to map regions zoom
- Pan transitions dynamic data updates
Preparation:
It's better to have a passing familiarity with D3.js. Make sure you can copy and paste the chloropleth code from here and have a local version working.
